CBD & its Scope

Cannabidiol (CBD) is the second most prevalent active ingredient of Cannabis sativa. CBD seems to be on everyone’s lips these days, including as a lip balm. It is one of 113 identified cannabinoids in cannabis plants and accounts for up to 40% of the plant's extract. CBD is an essential component of medical marijuana, it is derived directly from the hemp plant, which is a cousin of the marijuana plant [1].

It is a popular natural remedy used for many common ailments. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the main psychoactive (drug or other substance that affects how the brain works and causes changes in mood, awareness, thoughts, feelings, or behavior) cannabinoid found in cannabis plants. However, CBD is not psychoactive. This quality of CBD makes it a great option for those who are looking for relief from pain and other symptoms without the mind-altering effects of marijuana or certain pharmaceutical drugs.

CBD oil is made by extracting CBD from the cannabis plant, then diluting it with a carrier oil like coconut, olive or hemp seed oil. CBD has gained a huge global market following in recent years because of the medicinal benefits patients have reported experiencing. It's gaining momentum in the health and wellness world, with some scientific studies confirming that it is useful for reducing inflammation, anxiety and it is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a treatment for epilepsy conditions [2].

How can CBD be consumed?

CBD can be consumed through various ways, which can be overwhelming and sometimes confusing. Here are some most common ways to consume CBD.

  1. CBD Topical Products

Topical Products like roll-ons, balms, lotions, skincare oils are a wonderful and effective way to relieve localized pain, inflammation, and stress.

1. CBD Tinctures

They are administered using a dropper and placed underneath the tongue. This is the most common way to consume CBD.

2. CBD Edibles

Chocolate, gummy, candy, mint, tea, and drinks are another great way to consume CBD.

3. CBD Oils

It is quite similar to CBD tincture, but it can be used in vaporizer as well. CBD oil is usually bitter in taste as compared to CBD tinctures.

4. CBD Vaporizing

It is a clearer and much easier way to inhale CBD. Vaporizing CBD has a more immediate effect on the body by directly entering into the bloodstream without having to digest through the intestines and liver.

Scope of CBD

1. Can Relieve Pain

CBD acts as an anti-inflammatory by preventing the release of compounds that trigger inflammation in the body. Also applying ointments and balms helps to alleviate pain.

2. May Reduce Anxiety and depression

A 2019 study showed that CBD significantly reduced symptoms in mice with anxiety. CBD might help reduce anxiety-related behaviors in people with PTSD, general anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder.

3. Can Alleviate Cancer Symptoms

CBD may help to reduce nausea and vomiting, which are among the most common chemotherapy related side effects for those with cancer.

4. Could Benefit Heart Health

High blood pressure causes higher risk of a number of health conditions, including stroke and heart attack. Studies show that CBD might help with high blood pressure. Researchers have suggested that the properties of CBD like reducing stress and anxiety helps in lowering blood pressure.

There is growing interest in CBD as a therapy for various conditions, but only one product currently has FDA approval which is used for the treatment of Epilepsy [3]. Though there is much to be learned about the efficacy and safety of CBD, results from recent studies suggest that CBD may provide a safe, powerful natural treatment for many health issues.
